About Mexican surfboard shaper Ody Ordaz
Ody started surfing 20 years ago. A year later he was sweeping floors at the local ding repair shop. His boss gave him a chance to sand a few dings, and seeing his talent and love for the craft, he soon took the broom away from Ody, handed him a sander and he was on his way, fixing everything from fin cuts to broken boards. Not long after Ody would be saving everything he earned to buy materials to shape and glass his own designs.
He would go on to win longboard competitions surfing his very own label, winning Mexican Nationals twice.
His friends, noticing his enthusiasm and talent began ordering boards from Ody. Soon word got out that not only is Ody creative, but he also has an eye for perfection. He was no longer able to keep up with his ding repair because of the demand for his new surfboard designs.
Ody relocated to California for 3 years to perfect his talent and be where materials and mentors were readily available.
The warm waters of Puerto Escondido and the laid back lifestyle in Mexico called him back home. Ody moved back in 2005, building his factory, surfshop and home out at the point (La Punta de Zicatela).
The Odyboards company has grown to include an on-site ding repair specialist and two other talented guys completing the team. Ody is busy shaping more boards than ever before, focusing on durable, light, hand-shaped epoxy surfboards.
His experienced craftsmanship can be appreciated in the shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, paddleboards and other unique designs he creates from start to finish, and his warm nature will have you smiling all the way to the waves.
