FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some answers to our customers frequently asked questions.
1. Where are you located? In Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico.
If you are coming from Puerto Escondido, we are at the third entrance to La Punta. If you are heading to Puerto Escondido from Huatulco, look for our sign that says "SURFBOARDS" on the factory's roof (a couple exits after the La Barra Gas station).

2. I have a board I love and want to make a copy, can you do that? Only a computer shape will come out exactly the same, but we can use the measurements of another surfboard as a guideline. Here is how you can take your measurements...

Nose width:  Width at one foot from the nose of your board.
Hip width:  Width at the middle of your board.
Tail width:  Width at one foot from the tail of your board.

Thickness:
You probably won’t have calipers, but you can still eyeball the thickness. Put the board rail up and look directly down on the rail at mid-board.  Line your eye with the end of a measuring tape, and the bottom (flat vertical side) of the board.  Move your head to line your eye with the top and write down the measurement.  Not super accurate, but useful.

3. How long does it take to make a board?
It depends on how many custom orders I have when you order. Anywhere between 1 and 3 weeks.

4. What are your boards made of?
Polystyrene foam core with wood stringer. Glassed with epoxy resin and 6/6/4oz glass on top and 6oz on the bottom.

5. Does an epoxy board feel different when I ride it?
Yes, it is a little more "floaty" but like any new board, after riding it a few times you get used to it and begin to love it.

6. What is the difference between epoxy ad polyurethane resin? Polyester resin has been used in the industry since the 1960's. We believe it is time to think about the environment. The epoxy resin we use gives off only 0.02% of the toxins that polyester resin does. Making our boards durable and not "disposable" and offering "buy-it-back" boards are only a few ways we at Odyboards are trying to do our part.

7. Are your boards as strong as polyester boards?
After test riding and experimenting with the different materials available, we have come up with a combination of foam density and glass weight that will be durable yet light for surfing the heavy waves of Puerto Escondido. They are just as strong, if not stronger than most of the "traditional" boards. We do not compromise the quality of your board to cut corners in producing cost, we use only the highest quality materials.

8. Do you give surfing lessons?
We have a lifeguard that we refer you to. He is one of the best surf-teachers in Puerto. There are discounts for groups and consecutive lessons.

9. Do you rent surfboards?
We have a buy it back deal which is better than renting if you are in town for more than a week or two. You can read more about it on our pdf buy-it-back agreement .

10. Do you do ding repair?
Yes, we have an onsite ding-repair specialist in both epoxy and polyurethane boards. Turn around time is between 1 and 5 days.
