Surfing Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido has two seasons. Rainy season and dry season. The rainy season corresponds to the big waves season and is usually from the end of May until the end of October, but expect some small to medium swells during this time too, it all depends on Mother Nature and her storms out in the Pacific. The dry season runs from November until end of May and it's usually our smaller wave season but you can still get some swells of decent size. Here's a breakdown of the main surf breaks in Puerto Escondido and a few surf reports for you to check out.

zicatela

Playa Zicatela is a barreling beach break for advanced and professional surfers. Even in the small wave season this wave is fast and strong. This is the surf break that made Puerto Escondido famous. Otherwise known as the Mexican Pipeline, it's one of the top 10 waves in the world. Check out the video below of David Rutherford surfing Zicatela.

LA PUNTA

La Punta de Zicatela is a softer left point break that can barrel in the summer, so you can find beginners to professional surfers out depending on the swell. Check out the video below of La Punta de Zicatela on an average day.

carrizalillo

Carrizalillo is the most forgiving wave that the town of Puerto Escondido has to offer.

Offering both a right and left point break in a protected bay, it's a good spot for beginners to intermediate. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Escondido, but it's a long hike down the stairs and back up again. Keep in mind that it can get very crowded since the wave really only breaks in one spot.

beyond

Near Puerto Escondido there are tonnes of unexplored surf spots and a few more well known breaks. Chacahua is a right jetty about 2 hours away. It makes for a great side trip for a day or two when the swell is right. It's separated from the mainland by a mangrove lagoon, so it's a pretty sweet experience just getting out there.

There are quite a few other surf breaks around Puerto Escondido. The rest are apparently "secret" so you'll have to ask around when you arrive.
